Frankfurt, Germany: Why Go
Frankfurt, Germany: Relish Your Frankfurt Dining Experience
What's cooking up in Frankfurt's melting pot tonight--brats and beer? Spanakopita? Tortellini? You'd be surprised.
Get a taste of old Frankfurt in the Sachsenhausen neighborhood. Wander the cobblestone streets lined with half-timbered houses, visit a museum, or stroll the banks of the Main River. Then visit one of the neighborhood's many ebbelwoi, or cider taverns, for German fare with a Frankfurt twist--instead of beer, you'll be served local hard apple cider.
Still hungry? Say prost to Grosse Bockenheimer Strasse, which locals have nick-named Fressgasse, or "pig-out alley." Delis, wine shops, beer gardens, restaurants, and happily satiated diners line the popular thoroughfare.
Saturday morning, make time to roll yourself over to the Bornheimer Wochenmarkt, the city's biggest farmer's market. Euros fly and loaves of rye, cheeses, cold cuts, and wine change hands faster than you can say danke schoen.
Where does all this great fresh produce go? A lot of it goes to the city's highly acclaimed gourmet restaurants. Three out of four new eateries in the city do not specialize in German food. So you can munch on moussaka, nibble on nori, and lunch on lasagna for a taste of what the new Frankfurt has to offer. Guter Appetit!
