Where the locals go: For one day, once a year, every summer, the gates open on Harry Lynde and Peg Bradley's private sculpture garden. The Bradley's and the Milwaukee Museum of Art host locals curious about the works of Barbra Hepworth and Ernest Shaw. If you're lucky enough to hit this date right, you'll enjoy homemade local foods and live music as well.
Best place to bring a date: Voted "Best Make-Out Spot," Milwaukee's Oriental Theater features three screens and a full stage with a curtain and high, cathedral ceilings. Life-sized Buddha statues watch over obscure, independent, and foreign films that are likely to be filled with stories of romance.
Strange Brew: Naturally, real Milwaukeeans love their brewskies! And Sprecher Brewing Company, the first microbrewery established in Milwaukee in 1985, produces the Abbey Triple, a fruity ale which gets a thumbs up throughout this Brew City.
You can take it with you: Stock up on sweets and specialty items for friends and family at the Milwaukee Public Market, the indoor/outdoor year-round farmers' market that showcases Wisconsin-grown products.
Break the bank dinner: Skip the schnitzel and beer for a night and opt for a candlelight dinner at the Old Town Serbian Gourmet House, which serves Serbian specialties such as sarma (stuffed sauerkraut rolls) and burek, a humongous phyllo dough pastry loaded with interesting fillings.
Place we love even if it's touristy: See for yourself how Brew City got its name with a tour of the Miller Brewing Company, where you can observe the cold filtering process and sample the finished product, of course.
