Fort Worth: Why Go
Fort Worth, TX: Born to Be Wild, Raised to Be Cultured
From cattle auctions and homemade boots to a thriving museum and arts scene, Fort Worth holds onto its roots and spreads its wings.
Often caught in the shadows of mighty Dallas, Fort Worth is home to great Western classics: longhorn cattle drives, custom motorcycles and honky tonks. No surprise there. But don't write Big D's lil' sis off as a cow town just yet. After all, Vanity Fair magazine named its cultural district, "one of the great art destinations in the world." Surprised? Read on.
It just wouldn't be proper to not first pay homage to Ft. Worth's roots. Visit the Stockyards National Historic District, the American Iron Horse motorcycle flagship store, and the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame to honor the city's untamed pedigree.
Switch gears at Sundance Square's shops and galleries and the Gauguin and Impressionism exhibition at the Kimbell Art Museum (12/18/05-3/26/05; www.kimbellart.org/ for details).
Further signs of the city's evolution from podunk to polished can be found at the Modern Art Museum and on the stages at Bass Performance Hall (which presents The Best of Randy Newman performed by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Randy Newman and Miguel Harth-Bedoya on 9/24/05 ; www.basshall.com for details).
So, giddy-up and go--from cow town to culture center, Fort Worth is worth your while.
