San Antonio: Why Go
San Antonio, TX: Mariachi Nights, Rockabilly Days
A combination of Mexican and cowboy cultures, San Antonio is truly "Fiesta City" when the energy is up, and "Siesta City" when all you want to do is relax with a margarita.
Place we love even if it's touristy: Walking along San Antonio's Riverwalk (especially at night) as mariachis serenade you and colored lights illuminate your way will make you feel like you're in a movie from the 1940's. The newly expanded section of Riverwalk will captivate you with lush greenery and sculptures from local artisans
Chill-out spot: Grab an inner tube and head to the Guadalupe River for some truly tranquil times, perfect for a long siesta and working on your tan.
Get out of dodge: Head to the hills and check out Bandera, Texas, the self-proclaimed Cowboy Capital of the World. Located about an hour West of San Antonio, it's the place to be to get your cowboy groove on. With your choice of dude ranches, you'll be roping cattle and horseback riding like a pro.
Most bang for your buck: Locals can be found at Schilo's Deli, a German restaurant in the heart of downtown. Try the corned beef, or one of their delicious reubens, and wash it down with their famous homemade root beer. This place is a hot spot and the dining room fills up quickly for lunch and dinner.
History lesson: Forget Ozzy Osborn and remember the Alamo! People gather from all over to remember the ultimate sacrifice men such as David Crockett and Jim Bowie made against overwhelming odds during Texas's fight for independence.
Local tipple: Most establishments in San Antonio have their own take on the margarita. Try Boudro's Prickly Pear Margarita, or La Fogotoa's Mango Margarita- and you will be amazed at the many variations of this famous drink.
