El Paso: Why Go
El Paso, TX: Wild as the West Texas Wind
Frontier flavor is alive and kicking a two-step at this border town graced with tall mountains, cattle ranches, and the emerging onset of a new Texican culture.
History lesson: See the domicile of "Mr. El Paso" himself at the 19-room, adobe-style Magoffin Home, a state historic site dating back to 1875. Magoffin was one of El Paso's most prominent founders, and decorated his abode abode with mid-Victorian trim and a 13-foot-high canopy bed. Ghostbusters, take note: some say the house is haunted.
Get out of Dodge: Proximity makes it easy to make a run for the border to Juarez, which lies just across the Rio Grande River. Be sure to say hola to the old Mercado crafts market with silver, turquoise, pottery (and so much more), and the 1600s-era cathedral. Get into the "ole" spirit while watching bullfighting at Plaza Monumental, or take a trolley on a guided loop tour of the historic district.
Where the locals go: Since 1840, many of the city's most famous and infamous residents--from Buffalo Soldiers and Mexican ex-presidents to notorious gun-slinger John Wesley Hardin--have made Concordia Cemetery their final spot to rest in peace. And because communing with the dead across 54 acres, 15 sections, and 65,000 plots can make the living thirsty, be sure to stop into the country store for refreshments.
Where to blow a paycheck: Go nutty with fresh flavors at Stahmann Farms and Country Stores. To get here, take scenic Highway 28 beneath a miles-long canopy of pecan trees, then feast on pecans in all their varied forms, be they chocolate covered, cooked into pie, baked into shortbread, or purely au natural.
The real deal: Small but filled with life, be sure to head to H&H Car Wash and Coffee shop. Listen in on all the local gossip when you sidle up to the 40-year-old formica countertop. If you've rented a car, you can get it washed while you soak up the breakfast flavors of a picadillo omelet or chiles rellenos made from scratch at the grill.
