Portland, OR: Why Go
Portland, OR: When it Rains, It Pours
Optimists call it the City of Roses, while pessimists refer to it as Puddletown--whatever your outlook, it is always abuzz with eclectic neighborhoods, outdoorsy attractions, and gastronomic goodies.
Get your bearings: The Willamette River flows north through the city; while Burnside Street divides the city between the north and south sides of Portland. As a result, street addresses are determined by quadrant.
Local tipple: With about 30 craft breweries in Portland, ordering a microbrew is a safe choice. Try a McMenamin's Terminator Stout, Bridgeport Ropewalk Amber Ale, or a Rainier Beer.
Take a hike: Pass 800 varieties of trees along the trails of the Hoyt Arboretum. Or climb through old-growth forests up to Portland's highest point, Council Crest, where you can see five mountains at once: Hood, Rainier, St. Helens, Adams, and Jefferson.
History lesson: They don't call it Rose City for nothing. The oldest public rose test garden in the U.S. is at Washington Park in Portland's West Hills.
Where to blow a paycheck: Powell's City of Books, the largest indie bookstore in the U.S., attracts both locals and tourists to its nine rooms and four floors of bookworm heaven.
Local eats: If you like mac 'n' cheese spicy or with spam or with sun-dried tomatoes, Le Bistro Montage makes for a quirky night out. The seating is family style at this Cajan bistro, and if you order oyster shooters, your server will bellow "oystah" to the kitchen.
You can take it with you: From March to Christmas Eve, the Saturday Market features artisan works by glassblowers, woodworkers, and knitters, local food items like Moppethill Farms jams and Grandma?s Candy brittles, as well as a homespun food court, live music, and activities for kids. Located under Burnside Bridge, this outing is weatherproof!
Good to know: It's no secret that Portland gets its share of rain, so it's best to have a plan A and a plan B....and an umbrella wouldn't hurt either.
Get out of dodge: Less than an hour away, Mt. Hood keeps its ski runs open year round. And the 620-foot cascade that is Multnomah Falls is an easy drive through the Columbia Gorge.
