Rochester: Why Go
Rochester, NY: Picture Perfect
The home of Kodak film boasts sights that even the most discriminating of shutterbugs can't resist.
Hey shutterbug, you can snap all the photos you want this weekend; the film reserves are secure in Rochester, the home of Eastman Kodak, the worlds leading producer of picture-taking goodies. Not only is there plenty of film to be shot here, but Rochester is loaded with the sights you want to record for posterity.
Start in the middle of town at the High Falls, the highest of three waterfalls that crashes within city limits. Let your kids drag you into the Strong Museum, housing a replica of the Sesame Street set, for a shot of them in Big Bird's nest. Afterward, explore the house where Susan B. Anthony wrote The History of Women's Suffrage, and Highland Park, graced by a statue of abolitionist Frederick Douglass amongst orchids and banana trees.
Drive out to Lake Ontario to capture old-school custard shops, carousels and art-deco bathhouses in their quiet pre-season glory. On your way back into town, stop at Richardson's Canal House on the Erie Canal for elegant French country cuisine in a restored 19th-century tavern. Before you leave, see if your shots measure up to the great ones in the International Museum of Photography.
