Albany: Why Go
Albany, NY: Fly & Drive -- The Empire (State) Strikes Back
New York state's other famous city serves as the gateway to three mountain ranges, and features a thriving arts community, rich history, and eclectic local charm. Take that, Big Apple.
Off-the-beaten path: Get your blood pumping on the 41-mile Hudson-Mohawk Bikeway. Cyclists of all abilities can pedal along the Hudson and Mohawk rivers from Island Creek Park through Corning Preserve Park. Walkers and joggers are welcome too.
Break the bank dinner: If you're date's game, make reservations at Angelo's 677 Prime and order the 40-ounce Porterhouse steak for two?and while you?re at it, throw in a lobster tail for a surf-and-turf splurge. The expansive wine list covers more than 200 labels--and if you have $5,000, you can join their wine club.
Day after the break the bank dinner: On Sundays, Bombers Burrito and Tequila Bar has $2 Bloody Marys, and Buffalo wings are $0.25 on Monday nights. Of course, you can get tacos and burritos for a few bucks any day or night of the week too.
Did we mention it's free? Per square foot, the Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza is chock-full of entertainment. You could spend an afternoon exploring this 10-building complex, which includes the State Capitol, the New York State Museum, the 42-floor Corning Tower, and the oval-shaped Empire State Performing Arts Center, nicknamed "The Egg."
Good to know: Surprisingly to some, Albany is home to a thriving arts community. The Performing Arts Center, or "The Egg", houses a 983-seat theater--which actually makes it not so surprising that Albany has more theater seats per capita than the Big Apple.
Where the locals go: Lark Street is Albany's version of Greenwich Village. From Washington to Madison Avenues, you can admire 19th-century brownstones as you cross cobblestone intersections. The street's funky vibe attracts indie shops, restaurants, and galleries. Support the local artist community with a visit to the Upstate Artists Guild (UAG).
Star search: Learn to identify stars, planets, and constellations at the Hudson Planetarium, and impress that special someone with your astronomy expertise. If you happen to arrive on the second Saturday of each month, you can hone your skills at the Saturday Star Sighting.
