Jackson: Why Go
Civil War meets Civil Rights in a historic Sunbelt city where something's always in bloom.
While the magnolia state of Mississippi may be a mouthful, Jackson--with its nearness to the Natchez Trace--is easily palatable. Just two simple syllables, and none of those double s's or p's to worry about. So open wide and enjoy a getaway filled with Sunbelt gardens and Southern civility.
The city is rich with historic buildings, from the governor's mansion to city hall. Baptist and Presbyterian churches alternate with antique shops and flea markets. Interspersed with Civil War relics and defunct plantations, landmarks from the Civil Rights Movement stand around every bend. Pay visits to the Medgar Evers statue, the Woolworth sit-in site, or the Smith Robertson Museum to see the momentous role local residents played in changing the tides of tolerance in the South and beyond.
Be sure to take a meandering wander through Mynelle Gardens. Even when the camellia isn't in bloom, the serene pond turtles and fish make it clear why this place was used by returning WWII soldiers as a place of recovery.
