Kansas City: Why Go

Kansas City, MO: Bebop 'Till Ya Don't Stop
The land of BBQ. The birthplace of Bebop. The City of Fountains. In this city of many hats, there's a lot more to keep you entertained than you might think.

Local flavor: You can't visit KC without devouring some slow-smoked BBQ. The options are endless, so we've narrowed it down to three: Gates Bar-B-Q, Arthur Bryant Barbeque, and Fiorella's Jack Stack.

History lesson: Originally built over natural springs to provide water for horses, there are now more than 160 fountains all over Kansas City. The oldest is the Nelson-Atkins Museum Rozzelle Court Fountain, dating as far back as 200 A.D.

Where to blow a paycheck: The 80-year-old Country Club Plaza--Plaza to the locals--attracts fashionistas to its local boutiques like Hemline and Pinstripes. Modeled after Seville, Spain and covering 14 blocks, the Plaza was the first outdoor shopping center in the country.

Editor's favorite watering hole: A little bit of Ireland in the heart of the Plaza, O' Dowds Little Dublin is designed with authentic woodwork and cabinetry imported from Dublin, and it serves potent, well-poured pints.

Day after the break your bank dinner: Whether or not you splurge the night before, head to Cupini's for hearty servings of fresh, homemade pasta. Order the pasta and meatballs for $6--it's enough for two.

Place we love even if it's touristy: The restored Union Station is a working train station and entertainment complex that's also a Kansas City historical landmark. Its striking Grand Hall has 95-foot ceilings and three 3,500-pound chandeliers. It?s home to Science City, which will entertain kids and adults for hours.

Did we mention it's free? Considered the birthplace of jazz, Kansas City's 18th and Vine Historic District is now home to the American Jazz Museum, the Blue Room Jazz Club, and Gem Theater.

Best spot for music lovers: Live music reigns supreme in KC, but no visit is complete without getting your groove on at the Grand Emporium. Whether you like blues, reggae, rock, jazz, swing, or all of the above, you'll be more than just tapping your toes here.
