Baltimore: Why Go
Baltimore, MD: Charmed, I'm Sure
Go beyond the Inner Harbor to discover the quirky, fascinating, and stunning elements that make Baltimore the Charm City.
Most visitors to Baltimore don't get beyond the city's Inner Harbor during their stay (with the possible exception being a jaunt inside the idyllic walls of Camden Yards, home of baseball's Orioles, and one of the finest ballparks in the major leagues). Not that there's anything wrong with that: the USS Constellation battleship anchored there is a delight for exploring, as is the Torsk submarine. And the National Aquarium immerses wide-eyed land-dwellers in a magical marine world of sharks, dolphins, and Calypso, a rescued four year-old endangered sea turtle.
But be advised: if you want to get a sense of the heart and soul of the Charm City, you gotta get outta the Inner. A water taxi ride will take you to Fell's Point, a waterfront neighborhood packed with pubs and fresh seafood spots like Bertha's, where you'll find the finest steamed wild mussels around, along with live blues on many nights.
Head to Hampden to find independent restaurants such as Cafe Hon (as in the way Flo on Alice addressed most of her customers) and unique shops like Ma Petite Shoe, which peddles both funky women's shoes and tasty chocolates. Keep the whimsy going at the Visionary Arts Museum, a wonderous archive of the eccentric and extraordinary work of untrained artists.
For more upscale tastes, meander the quaint streets of Federal Hill, tour the antiquities collection at the Walters Museum, and make your way to Harbor East and feast on elegant low-country cuisine at Charleston Restaurant.
