Oakland: Why Go
Oakland, CA: There Is a There, There
Contrary to Gertrude Stein's famous quote, "There is no there, there," Oakland's natural beauty, diverse neighborhoods, and spectacular views of San Francisco Bay make it the place to be.
Break the bank dinner: Entering Oliveto in Rockridge is like stepping into a Tuscan villa. Savor co-owner (and early Chez Panisse chef) Chef Paul Bertolli's artisan salumi or anything from the wood oven. Whether you climb the sweeping staircase to the elegant restaurant on the second floor, or opt for the casual cafe on the ground floor, you're sure to enjoy fresh, seasonal Italian cuisine.
Day after the break the bank dinner: If you're looking for some good home cooking (and bargain prices), get the ribs and a side of baked beans at Everett and Jones BBQ. Tip: save room for the sweet potato pie.
Editor's favorite watering hole: George and Walt's is a neighborhood hangout with roots. Head over for a game of pool and a beer, but remember to add your name to the white board on the wall--otherwise you may never get to play.
Place we love, even if it's touristy: Yoshi's Japanese Restaurant & World Class Jazz House at Jack London Square is the spot to go for live jazz and fresh sushi. While the combo seems unlikely, it works here, and when you make dinner reservations it guarantees you a table for the show.
The real deal: While the Ferry Building across the bay gets lots of attention, the Oakland Artisan Marketplace at Jack London Square is a good bet to marvel at just-picked, local produce and handmade crafts.
Chill-out spot: Whether you run, walk, or bike the three-and-a-half mile path around Lake Merritt, or you row in this urban saltwater lake, there's no denying that it's a local gem.
Where the locals go: Give the old dinner-and-a-movie thing a twist and catch a flick at the Parkway Theater. You can sit back on a couch and order the Zorba the Greek salad or the Buffalo wings of desire and wash 'em down with a pitcher of beer.
Where to blow a paycheck: Husband-wife team Chris and Alexandra Silverman opened Twenty Two Shoes, a little shoe boutique on College Avenue. Soon after, they began to design their own line, which is crafted in Italy and showcased here.
