Rochester, NY: Fly & Drive -- Live Large
Think big as you visit the Grand Canyon of the East, the vineyards of the Finger Lakes, and Lake Ontario this fall.

One of America's beloved philanthropists and inventors, George Eastman, left the mark of his expansive fortune on an environment equally expansive--the one in which he made Kodak the world's leading film company. See what we mean with a tour of Eastman's gigantic mansion, now a museum for film, cameras, and photography.

Trek out of town to see the Grand Canyon of the East, a 600-foot-deep gorge carved by the Genesee River, at Letchworth State Park. Drive the park's 17-mile scenic road, or hike its trails packed with breathtaking views of the gorge and three majestic waterfalls. Take a mid-afternoon break at the European-style Casa Larga vineyard for a lofty wine tasting and tour.

Next, head to the south shore of sprawling Lake Ontario to admire old-school custard shops, carousels, and art-deco bath houses in their quiet, post-crowd glory. On your way back into town, indulge in a meal that matches the large scale of your visit, a spread of veal shanks Milanese and New Zealand rack of lamb at Richardsons Canal House.

Recommendations & Suggestions

Casa Larga
2287 Turk Hill Road
Phone: 585.223.4210

Founded in 1974 by first-generation Italian immigrant Andrew Colaruotolo, who helped his grandparents on their own vineyard in Gaeta, Casa Larga wines have won over 160 awards in state, regional and international competitions, continuing a heritage of excellence in winemaking. The dcor, featuring vaulted ceilings, Italian marble and a bell tower, is reminiscent of the finest grape growing regions in Europe. Casa Larga offers a year-round tour program where visitors can see the winemaking process from graft to glass. Families with children are welcome and there is complimentary grape juice for the kids. From the vineyard deck, you can see the Rochester skyline, 15 miles away.

Letchworth State Park
1 Letchworth State Park Exit 7, Interstate 390
Phone: 585.493.3625

Open year-round, the 17-mile-long Letchworth State Park not only affords amazing views of the Genesee River Gorge, often called the Grand Canyon of the East, but also features a number of unique activities, including sleigh rides, snow tubing, cross country skiing, hot air ballooning, white water rafting, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, swimming, nature programs and Mt. Morris Dam guided tours. More than 70 miles of hiking trails climb to many scenic vistas in the 14,350-acre park, and are favorite backpacking destinations. There are also more than 20 miles of biking trails. A gorge trail leads into the canyon and exhibits millions of years of geological history. The Finger Lakes Trail is a rugged 21-mile hike. Visitors can also explore Native American history at the Letchworth Museum or the Seneca Indian Council House on park grounds.

Richardson's Canal House
1474 Marsh Road
Phone: 585.248.5007

This restored 1818 tavern is located on the Erie Canal and has been featured in such publications as The New York Times, Travel & Leisure, Country Living and Bon Appetite. Once a haven for rollicking canal builders, this Federal-transitional-Greek Revival building has kept much of its original exterior and interior trim throughout its 180-year history. The bright yellow color on the exterior is true to the original.

French country cuisine is served by candlelight in the Canal House's main dining room. Specialties include Veal Shanks Milanese with Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes and the Mixed Grill of Lamb Chop, House-made Venison and Dried Fruit Sausage, and Ostrich Filet with Green Peppercorn-Cranberry Sauce. Reservations are not required but preferred.
