Phoenix, AZ: Why Go

Photo by Philipp Kuecuekyan Photo by Philipp Kuecuekyan Photo by Philipp Kuecuekyan
Phoenix, AZ: Risen from the Ashes
It's no myth that this desert oasis is a haven for sunrise-hikers, spa-worshippers, and fans of all flavors Southwestern.

Chill-out spot: The Desert Botanical Gardens aren't just for rocks and prickly cacti. The oasis constantly has something in bloom, and is located within Papago Park, a prime place to relax, regroup, and take in red-rock vistas.

Bang for your buck: Dig into to a feast of Southwestern BBQ basted in a subtly sweet sauce with an orange tang at Honeybears BBQ, where you'll only find locals, and a massive, hearty meal with dessert only sets you back eight bucks.

Best place to blow a paycheck: If your shoulders permanently hunch at ear-height, splash out on a trip to the Willow Stream Spa. Once the skilled spa technicians do their magic, you'll be so relaxed, you won't even flinch when it's time to pay.

Place we love, even if it's touristy: Architectural great Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West is a stone structure which blends into the mountains of Scottsdale as fluidly as a dessert iguana changes its colors. Meant to be a winter home to Wright and his students, Taliesin West still houses many aspiring architects schooled in Wrights "learning by doing" method.

Local Secret: La Grande Orange Grocery is a local, French-style bakery and grocery where you can enjoy Southwestern pizza, heart-conscious sandwiches and salads, and desserts that aren't.

Get out of dodge: About three hours outside of Phoenix are the tranquil, red rocks of Sedona. Spend the day hiking along cacti, horseback-riding through canyons, or taking a pink jeep tour to impossibly high (and equally beautiful) elevations.

The Desert Botanical Garden's Living Collection holds more than 20,000 plants, 70% of which have been "wild-collected." Bird-watchers take note: As the garden's plants provide birds with nesting sites, materials, food and shelter, and because of the garden's year-round blooming season, the garden is also one of the most accessible birding areas in Phoenix.

Papago Park
West Park Drive
Phone: 602.262.4837

Papago Park is 1,200 acres of relatively easy hiking, making it a great place for family outings. Paved and natural trails pass through red-rock formations, including the fascinating Hole in the Rock butte.

In addition to hiking, the park is also home to the city zoo, and the excellent Desert Botanical Garden.

Keep in mind that even though the park trails don't gain much altitude, temperatures can go over 100 degrees during the summer, so don't forget sunscreen and water.

Or just enjoy a traditional massage in a variety of styles.

Part of what sets the Phantom Horse spa apart from the rest is an innovative program for children and teens. Pueblo Grande Museum
4619 E Washington St
Phone: 602.495.0901

Sometime in the 15th century, an entire village of Hohokam people mysteriously abandoned their home. This village was at the heart of where the city of Phoenix now sits. When an English settler came upon the ruins of the village, he named the area after the Greek myth of a Phoenix rising from its ashes.

Those ruins were preserved and are now housed within the Pueblo Grande Museum and Cultural Park, along with artifacts that have been unearthed on the site as well as interpretive exhibits.

Sam's Cafe
455 N. Third St.
Phone: 602.252.3545

The food at Sam's isn't especially fancy, but it does provide an unforgettable taste experience, applying Native-American and Mexican influences to standard fare. Steaks are rubbed with a mix of seven southwestern spices, for example, before grilling, and ordinary cream soup is transformed into poblano chicken chowder. This downtown restaurant is crowded, so reservations are recommended.
