Sacramento, CA: You Will Be Back...
Sac-To's gourmet restaurants, spirited sports fans, and palate-pleasing wines ensure the capital's place as one of the top destination cities of "Kay-lee-for-nie-ah."

Place we love even if it's touristy: Girlie men, beware: a Sacramento Kings game at the Arco Arena is not for the faint of heart. Even if the team is having an off-year, the fans are notoriously loyal, making for a truly intense, yet satisfying evening of b-ball.

Local tipple:With so may wineries nearby, Sacramento oenophiles are very proud of this capital's local tipple. Dancing Coyote's 2003 Petite Sirah is especially divine, with a fruity aftertaste that will complement a meal rich in savory pastas, hearty steaks, or stir-fried vegetables.

Most bang for your buck: Locals can be heard negotiating their way to the best bargains at Denio's Roseville Farmer's Market and Auction, where independent vendors fill the outdoor marketplace with just about everything you can fit into your attic.

Chill-out spot: Yep, there's more to Folsom than a prison made famous by Johnny Cash. Hikers, bikers, and nature enthusiasts can be seen partaking in the many offerings at Folsom Lake. Los Lagos Trail has the best views of the lake, and Old Salmon Falls is the perfect place for picnics.

Break the bank dinner: Rub elbows with the politically elite while singing arias at the baby grand piano at Biba's. While the wine and the music are flowin', make sure to munch on crispy calamari and Chilean sea bass to give your taste buds a feast that could please even Pavarotti.

Dress code: Polo shirts and khakis rule the day for non-politicos, while twin sets abound for women.

Editor's favorite watering hole: The 4th Street Grill is the place to see and be seen while sipping a local Pinot Noir, but the Cedar Room, a "Cheers-like" dive bar with a vintage jukebox to boot, offers cheap drinks and a dark room that's perfect for relaxing with friends.

Where the locals go: On the second Saturday of each month, all Sacramento galleries and studios are open to the public for free, and they graciously provide vino and snacks. Locals can wander about discovering new talent, and even buy a piece of art to add to their collection.

Recommendations & Suggestions

This class II river flows through the scenic American River Parkway, just a few miles east of downtown Sacramento. Their excellent riverside location and two-acre park permit the rental company to organize rafting trips for groups of any size, and the oak-studded park has picnic tables, running water and restrooms, for use by their customers.

Raft rentals for four-six people range from approximately $38-$52, not including a guide. Guided excursions are available through American River Recreation for approximately $100 per person for a full day. Kayaks are also available for approximately $27 per person.

Biba's Restaurant
2801 Capitol Avenue
Phone: 916.455.2422

You may have seen one of her seven cookbooks at your local Barnes & Noble bookstore, or caught her television cooking show, but you will almost definitely find Biba Caggiano flittering tirelessly through her famed restaurant in the Central Valley. While big-city Los Angelinos and San Franciscans are stunned to find such authentic Italian food in a home-cooking town like Sacramento, Biba's has garnered myriad accolades from Gourmet, Travel & Leisure and the like.

Biba's cuisine is true to her native Bologna, yet is creatively paired with the fertile Valley's fresh produce. Antipasti dishes such as bruschetta with broccoli rabe, anchovies, raisins, crisp breadcrumbs and Pecorino cheese, and entrees like roasted breast of duck with sun-dried black cherries, port wine and caramelized grape syrup, served with braised, buttery fennel and roasted squash are fine examples of Biba's mastery.

Reservations are strongly recommended for dinner at Biba's.

City Bicycle Works
2419 K Street (at 24th Street)

Old Sacramento State Historic Park
Located at Second and I Streets
Phone: 916.445.4209

Experience what once was the commercial center of the Western United States during the Gold Rush days of the late 1840s and early 1850s. Located along the riverfront in downtown, this 28-acre National Register Landmark and state historic park is home to frontier-style shops, saloons, museums and boutiques. Have lunch aboard the Delta King Riverboat, or be entertained as the gold-rushers were at the Eagle Theater, the first building west of the Mississippi built solely for entertainment. The park features a number of special events that change monthly, and horse-drawn carriage tours are available during spring and summer.
