Reno, NV: Why Go
Gambler's paradise, all-American town, and gateway to the Sierra Nevada--the "Biggest Little City in the World" has everything you could wish for in a round-the-clock getaway, and then some.
Editor's favorite watering hole: Straight up or dirty? Mull over the menu of 102 martinis at Roxy's in the Eldorado, and pick the potion that's perfect for you. Throw one back and then toss a request over to the piano player who'll play even better when you sing along. And, if a martini isn't your thing, the wine list includes over 350 options.
The real deal: The Reno Livestock Events Center is where it?s at for priceless people watching, prestigious horse events, and maniacal monster truck rallies. The crown jewel of the yearly schedule is the summer Rodeo, which many say is the wildest in the west. Feeling creative? Be sure to check the roster of activities to see when you can participate in a steer decorating contest.
Best alleys, lanes, and gutters: How apropos: the National Bowling Stadium is shaped like a giant bowling ball. National tournaments bring in world champions to compete along 78 polished lanes. Unfortunately, the gutters are off-limits to amateurs, but you should still spare some time to check out the bowling memorabilia and the longest video scoring wall in the world.
Where to blow a paycheck: Home to the Truckee River Arts District, The River Walk area is an oasis of coffee shops, booksellers, art galleries, movie theatres, and quirky gift boutiques. If you're feeling active, finish your shopping tour by renting a kayak or raft and taking to Truckee's flowing turns.
History lesson: In Travelocity?s Local Secrets, Big Finds poll, the Liberty Belle Restaurant and Saloon was nominated for its slot machine museum, old west memorabilia, antique collection, and restaurant wait staff that treats you like family. This is the place to fill up on prime rib and steak after tracing the local history and traditions that have shaped Reno over the years.
Local flavor: Due to similarity in climate and topography to northwestern Spain, Reno was once a haven for Basque sheepherders and shepherds. These days, family-style Basque restaurants abound. Try the Santa Fe Hotel for hearty mountain recipes that have been passed down through the generations. Another option for Old World flavors is Louis' Basque Corner.
Get out of dodge: The ski resorts, hiking trails, and state parks of Lake Tahoe are only an hour's spectacular drive away, and completely worth the trip. Once you reach the lake, it's a 70-mile drive to circumnavigate it, but allot plenty of time to gawk at camera-ready mountain views.
