Monterey/ Carmel, CA: Why Go

Monterey/ Carmel, CA: The Sandy Side of Pebble Beach
Soak in the sun and chip your way out of the beach.

The sun is at your back and the waves are crashing at your feet on Carmel River Beach, and the only decision you need to make tonight is whether it'll be salmon or a Roquefort-crusted filet mignon. There is no need to rush and no need to worry, as life has slowed down enough for you to count the sea lions who lie about on offshore rocks.

Head into boutique-filled Carmel or continue your beach affair four miles south of town in Point Lobos State Reserve. Feel the sand between your toes along the coastline and look for gray whales, harbor seals, otter, pelicans, and cormorants. Did we forget to mention golf? Pebble Beach, Cypress Point, Spyglass- need we say more?

Recommendations & Suggestions

17 Mile Drive

Pack a lunch, pay a small fee (approximately $8), and take a drive through Pebble Beach's 17 Mile Drive. Your self-guided tour of Pebble Beach will include seeing the 5 most famous golf courses in Pebble Beach: Spyglass, Poppy Hills, Spanish Bay, the Cypress Club, and, of course, Pebble Beach. You'll also see amazing views of the blue Pacific and popular attractions such as Seal Rock and the Lone Cypress. Oogle at the amazingly decadent houses- some fetch over $20 million. Finally, stop off at one of the many vista points and picnic while taking in the crisp ocean air.

Snag a seat outside and listen to the quiet flow of the Big Sur River while sipping a glass of chardonnay. Try the River Inns deep fried calamari or almond crusted trout. After your meal, take a stroll by the river. Theres no need to rush home, the ocean will still be there for your drive back.

Carmel River State Beach

A local hideout, the Carmel River State Beach, is a sandy beach located a mile south of Carmel off of Scenic Drive. The Carmel River enters the pacific at this point, and you'll see a bird sanctuary frequented by pelicans, hawks, sandpipers, and king fishers.
